Vertigo & Balance – Dizziness, Unsteadiness & Falls

Your Story:

You turned your head quickly and the room spun. Or maybe you woke up and felt like you were on a boat, even though you were lying still. You’ve noticed you’re more cautious walking in crowds or turning corners, and you’re worried about losing your balance. It’s not just unpleasant—it’s starting to affect your confidence and independence.

What’s Going On?

Vertigo and balance issues often stem from problems in the inner ear (vestibular system), the nervous system, or muscle coordination. These systems work together to keep you upright and stable. When one is off, you may feel dizzy, lightheaded, or unsteady. Physiotherapy can help by identifying the root cause and retraining your body to regain control and confidence.

Common Conditions We Treat

BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)

You roll over in bed or look up, and suddenly the world spins. This is often caused by tiny crystals in your inner ear moving into the wrong canal. A simple repositioning manoeuvre (like the Epley manoeuvre) can often resolve it in just one or two sessions.

Vestibular Hypofunction

You feel off-balance or dizzy when walking, turning, or moving your head. This may be due to a reduced function in one ear, often following a virus or ear infection. Treatment includes vestibular rehabilitation exercises to retrain your brain and improve stability.

Post-Concussion Dizziness

After a head injury, you may feel foggy, dizzy, or off-balance. This can be due to vestibular disruption, visual tracking issues, or neck-related dizziness. Physiotherapy helps by addressing each contributing factor with targeted rehab.

Age-Related Balance Decline

You’ve noticed you’re more cautious walking on uneven ground or turning quickly. This is often due to reduced muscle strength, slower reflexes, or sensory changes. Physiotherapy focuses on balance training, strengthening, and fall prevention strategies.
